| The Difference a Month Makes |

The most recent McCannics e-surveys show the impact which the
extraordinary economic events over the past month - including the Russian
financial crisis, turmoil on international stock markets and large UK job
losses - have had on the outlook of internet-connected UK firms.
In early August 1998, 47.1 per cent of respondents thought that the most likely prospect for the UK economy over the next year was recession (negative growth). By early September, this had risen to 61.4 per cent. |

Despite the worsening fears of recession, the internet-connected firms
taking part in these two e-surveys reported similar sales
performance to that in June 1998.
Some 52 per cent of the firms said that their sales were higher in July 1998 than in July 1997 and 29 per cent said that they were lower. One month later, some 53 per cent said that their sales were higher in August 1998 than in August 1997 and 33 per cent said that they were lower. The resulting balances (the proportion saying higher minus the proportion saying lower) of +22 per cent and +19 per cent were a little higher that the +18 per cent in June 1998 (see chart). |

The balance of firms reporting increased prices continues to vary widely. In July 1998 a balance of +19 per cent said that their prices were up over the year and for August 1998 this had risen to +28 per cent. |
The thirteenth survey questionnaire was sent out on 2nd August 1998 and by 24th August responses had been received from 68 businesses across the UK. The fourteenth questionnaire was sent out on 1st September 1998 and by 7th September responses had been received from 57 businesses.
