a) From those which DID experience Millennium Bug effects on their business
"As web developers, our main point of liaison with clients is
often through the company's IT people. Most of these key people were wholly
unavailable for several weeks over the holiday period. They were on duty
over the Millenium and naturally they also took leave before or after the
key date. This held up all the sites on which we were working for about 3
weeks. Otherwise, it all went perfectly smoothly. The flu epidemic, OTOH....
now that *was* a Milliennium bug.
"The bug did have an effect on our business as it stopped a
lot of Americans visiting Europe as they wanted to be at home in case
anything happened."
"The only problem that occured was fixable via D.O.S and hence
of little
operational consequence.Had we not prepared for it the consequences
would have been severe both financially and operationally."
"The Millennium Bug was overhyped but not non existent which the
media seems to take delight in spreading currently. We did experience some
minor problems once actually in the new year and there are still problems
emerging, particularly with transaction based systems."
"What really irritated me was the article in The Times where
a journalist tried to claim that there was no such thing as the
Millenium Bug, and he got paid to write that!"
"Our problems were limited to one small Java Applet, but
from what we've seen elsewhere, the bug was by no means eradicated.
All sorts of professionals & organisations who should have known
better have been finding problems with email, servers, etc, etc."
"Yes the bug did have an effect on our business - it and all the
attention to it, hightened our awareness to a slow and snaky slothfulness
that had crept into our planning and survival mechanisms for our business.
Believe me, it pulled us up sharply! Having availed ourselves of the
training and support that was made available for small companies such as
ours we experienced no adverse effects from the bug which, if I read your
question correctly, is what you want to know. However, the attention to our
systems etc etc has made us more prepared for the future and has increased
our confidence in some of our suppliers and enhanced some of our
relationships which certain of our key customers - much more team orientated
"singing from the same hymn sheet" attitude. We now have in place a review
proccess which was lacking before. Who said grey clouds don't have silver
linings! That said, we are not complacent - it is not over
yet.................."
"The low disruption is a tribute to the effort spent beforehand
planninng, correcting and replacing"
"As a software developer we found another problem in our
software after 1 Jan, one we had missed, fortunately only very minor.
None of the problems we experienced were attributable to software we
had written ourselves, in fact old software (we go back to 1982) where
the date routines were our own worked perfectly without change. All
the problems were down to Microsoft, using even relatively recent
Microsoft development tools returned errors, in some cases totally
bizarre results, we had to isolate all these problems and workaround
them, we trapped all in advance except the one referred to above. Many
of the errors in Microsoft software were so elementary one wonders if
it had been written by new programmers and never tested. As a small
business the cost, in time, of working around all these problems was
relatively very large. I would like to bill Microsoft for all the
expense they have put us to, but of course this is a waste of time,
Microsoft is so large it is immune to complaints of its software not
being fit for the purpose it was sold for."
"You can't please the media I think a lot of people worked extremely hard to make sure the bug didn't bite."
"As the general hype was that the bug may have a major fact, I felt obliged as a one man ban to take relevant precautions"
"The fact that there was so little problems, vindicates the money spent on preperation."
"I think the fears and anxieties generated by the press about the imminent collapse of the world system were over hyped and that the consequences predicted failed to materialise. Even if they had, I think they would have been much more manageable than was forecast."
"It's funny how the people who created much of the hype before the event are now the same people telling us it was a waste of time and money and over hyped! It is of course the media I'm refering to - they created most of the scare stories before the event that had people who did not understand the technology worried. The govenerment did a good job of dispelling some of the hype by publishing their booklet which showed the reality of the situation and possible impact. Now that things seem to have gone quite smoothly after all the media accuse everyone else of building up the problem too much and the government of wasting money on the project! Perhaps if the media had not published so many inaccurate, and ill thought out scare stories before the event, the government would not have had to spend so much money reasuring people!!"
"The time and investment in avoiding the problem was well worth it, as the problem was avioded"
"It ain't over yet. Companies need to continue to be vigilant to avoid any disruption"
"There is still the possibility of millennium bug problems occurring"
"The money we spent on avoiding problems was part of an ongoing update of our equipment ..Our computer equipment only needed slight alterations, but most of our tills were some ten years old and these were replaced.Out of curiosity we kept one and it did fail, whereas our new epos system has worked fine so far."
"I think it was all a total con by the computer industry and ignorant politicians. All my computers were fine - even the old ones I did nothing to. I don't believe it was money well spent by anybody, since countries who did nothing survived as well as we did."
"What about those countries that did little or nothing about the millennium bug? Are they any worse off? In short, the answer is no. I now await to see how all those so-called "Y2K gurus" will desperately re-invent themselves and leap onto the next hyped IT bandwagon. After all, they have to earn a living somehow."
"With hindsight it's easy to say we overreacted. Mind you, I'll be happier when January's wages have gone through Ok..."
"*Apart from filling in damn-fool questionaires which probably wasted 100+ hours"
"I didn't need to worry about the bug since I am Mac based and none of the software I use was affected"
